Old Songs & Bothy Ballads - Here's a Health to the Company

Ron Bissett sings:

This comic song, which was one of Jimmy McBeath’s favourites, is a Willie Kemp composition and one of the many songs, cornkisters and bothy ballads that he recorded on the Beltona 78s in the late 1920s.

1: Some folk think I'm a funny lookin chap,
Some folk think I dinna care a rap,
Somre folk think they're awfa clever,
But they're mair need o their mither.

There was a chap come up to me and said,
"Man ye've a fine reid heid."
Says I, "Well ye hanna muckle hair yersel,
Wid you like some o mine for seed?"

"I'm nae sae green as I may seem,
Dae ye think I'm saft as candy;
Poke yer fun at some ither silly gun,
But ye winna pit it on tae Sandy."

2: Noo I went tae a theatre, I niver been afore,
I saw act one, I made for the door,
The door keeper said, "Hold on man Sandy,
Wait for the second act, man it's dandy."

But in the programme which I had,
This is what I read,
A year will elapse between the acts,
I turns tae him and said:

"I'm nae sae green as I may seem,
Dae ye think I'm saft as candy;
Me sit here for a hale boomin year,
Oh ye canna pit it on tae Sandy."

3: Noo I wis oot ae mornin lookin at the ducks,
By come a toff wi gun and knickerbucks,
Says he tae me, "For one shot Sandy,
At those ducks, here's a pound that's handy."

I says, "Aa richt, and I stuck it in ma pooch,
The shot killed twenty-one,
Says he, "Ye'll be sorry I killed sae mony,
Says I, "I've enjoyed the fun."

"I'm nae sae green as I may seem,
Dae ye think I'm saft as candy,
Tak yer aim and fire awa again,
They dinna belang tae Sandy."

4: But noo I'm mairried an I have a braw wife,
We live happy and we nivver hae a strife,
Of course I ken anither fella,
Comes and courts wi my wife Bella.

But I'm not an evil minded chap,
I ken the game they play,
Jist the ither nicht I caught them oot richt,
And then I had tae say:

"I'm nae sae green as I may seem,
Dae ye think I'm saft as candy,
When you're awa fae hame me an yer wife are daein the same,
So ye canna pit it on tae Sandy."
