As sung by Archie Webster, Strathkinness near St Andrews, Fife. Recorded by Peter Shepheard at his house on 17th June 1968 [Spr 68.2.47]. Archie learnt several of his songs including this ballad from his grandmother.

There lived a fair maid ln the North,
And few could be her marrow;
Nine noblemen cam courtin' her,
And a plooman lad fae Yarrow.

Nine noblemen sat drinkin' wine,
The plooman lad fae Yarrow;
There rose a dispute amang them aa,
They would fight for her in Yarrow.

So three they flew when three he slew,
And three lay deadly wounded;
Till her brother John stepped in between,
And pierced his broad sword through him.

'Go home go home you false young man,
And tell your sister in sorrow;
That her true love John lies dead and gone,
In the dowie dens o Yarrow.'
